Despite the absence of a land border with Syria, the Egyptian Government has allowed refugees into Egypt. As of 31 October 2014, 140,033 Syrian refugees have been registered with UNHCR. According to Government estimates, an equal number or more Syrians are unregistered and living in Egypt. The general situation in the country improved after the election of a new president in June 2014, which resulted in greater political stability throughout Egypt. However, the country has faced an increase in terrorist threats and incidents. In light of this, visa and security requirements for Syrians are required, and whilst Egyptian Government reunification, visa restrictions potentially impact on the ability of Syrians to seek access to territory and asylum.
